Science Technician (Apprentice)

Salary information: £13,000 per annum

Contract type: Fixed term initially for 18 to 24 months, full-time (with day-release one day per week), subject to an Enhanced DBS check

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic Science Technician to undertake an apprenticeship at School 21.  You will be given day-release one day per week to attend college whilst undergoing your Level 3 Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship and will gain invaluable experience whilst working at the school for the remaining four days of the week.    You will be an integral part of the Science Department and will assist with the delivery of an outstanding practical science curriculum. The technician will support the running and organisation of the science prep room.

Reporting to the Senior Laboratory Technician, you will have a vital role to play in the Science Department, both in support of teachers and undertaking various administrative matters. The primary responsibility is to ensure that pupils derive maximum benefit from practical lessons by communicating well with teaching staff to make sure that practical lessons are properly equipped. 

Other important tasks involve the maintenance of records, chemicals and equipment and ensuring that all equipment is prepared safely and delivered/cleared away in a timely manner.  It is expected that the laboratories are maintained in a safe and tidy fashion and that standard safety procedures are known and adhered to at all times. It would be advantageous if applicants had a basic knowledge of First Aid and a competency in ICT is necessary. You will have a scientific background preferably with Science A levels or equivalent qualifications or experience.

The role will suit someone with excellent communication, time management and organisational skills and someone who is able to show initiative and flexibility while balancing a range of scientific, health and safety, maintenance and cleaning responsibilities. We are looking for someone who can bring rigour, an eye for detail who has a passion for science to our established science team who teach across the middle, secondary and sixth form schools.

The apprentice technician will be responsible to the Science Team for:

  • Establishing and maintaining an organised and safe Prep Room
  • Developing requisition procedures and health and safety systems
  • Timely delivery of requested practical materials
  • Maintenance of equipment
  • Stock control
  • Occasional class demonstrations and in lesson support/support with educational visits
  • Maintenance of laboratory supplies

Supporting the delivery of the Science Curriculum:

  • Preparation of resources (including chemicals), selecting and assembling the correct apparatus
  • Obtaining materials by local purchase
  • Giving technical advice to staff
  • Attending science meetings and offering suggestions that will support delivery of concepts through practical science
  • Assisting practical classes and carrying out demonstrations where required by teachers
