Community Newsletter 17/05/2024

This week’s newsletter is (almost!) all about food. Read on to see what our students have been creating in the kitchen!

Other highlights this week include saying goodbye to butterflies in Reception class and a visit to the Houses of Parliament for a group of students in Year 5 and Year 12.

A quick reminder that Friday 24th May next week is our last day in school before the half-term break!

Walk to School Week!

Walk to School Week is back again! Next week (20th-24th May), we encourage families to walk/scoot/cycle to school wherever possible. In the primary classes, children will be discussing healthy lifestyles and the benefits of being active.

The class with the most children participating will win a little prize for their class!

LEARNING AT SCHOOL 21:

Reception

This week in Reception we said goodbye to our class butterflies! For the last few weeks we have watched them grow from caterpillars, into their chrysalis and now hatch into beautiful butterflies. Each class enjoyed a trip to forest school to release them safely.

We have been learning about lots of different animals life cycles and are currently working on video performances to share our learning!

Year 2

This week we have been making vegetable scones in PBL. We looked at instructional writing in English and what a healthy diet looks like in PBL to help us decide on what to include within the scones.

We are super excited for our year group picnic next week where we can showcase our cooking skills, and sample the products we have made!

Year 5 & Year 12

A group of students from year 5 and 12 had the privilege to go and see the Houses of Parliament, watch debates in both the House of Commons and House of Lords, have a tour around and meet with and ask questions to the Labour MP Lyn Brown, who kindly explained details about politics and the importance of free school meals, which she was debating about the same afternoon.

Year 7

Last week, the Year 7 Food Technology Project class learned about the mandatory information that is required on a food label and applied this knowledge to design their food labels for cheese and tomato toasties. This week the students learned about recipe modification and adapted this recipe to make it healthier using the concepts of the Eatwell plate.

Year 8

This week, Year 8 students learned about the importance of consuming 5-a day in the Food Technology lesson. They prepared a vegetable soup using a variety of vegetables and used the herbs grown in our school herb garden. A garden grant has funded the herb garden given to us by a charity called School Food Matters.

Year 9

This week, Sharon Conrad, a Chef from School Food Matters came to the school to deliver a wonderful workshop on the sustainability of fish and teach the students about Asian cooking. This is a part of the project they are learning on International Cuisine. The students prepared Thai fish cakes and Thai noodle salad. They learned several kitchen skills in the lesson and really enjoyed the experience!
