Dear parents and carers,
Last term was filled with creativity and community spirit. From the unforgettable 10th anniversary performances of Sister Act and our Eid celebration, to our vibrant World Book Day events, our students have continued to find their voices in inspiring ways.
This month, we have some wonderful opportunities to come together as a community. We look forward to seeing many of you at our parent meetings. We are also excited to welcome you into school for Bring a Parent to Play on Tuesday 21, 22 and 24 April. This is a lovely opportunity to join your children for lunch and spend some time together connecting and playing.
Thank you for your continued support in making these moments so special for our students.
With warm wishes,
Moray Dickson
Headteacher, School 21

What’s happening in S21 music this term?
Year 3 Songbook Project
Do you have a song that’s been handed down in your family – perhaps something sung as a lullaby, or a song that gets everyone joining in? Year 3 will be sharing special songs to add to our School 21 Songbook – these can be in any language, and simple is good as we’ll be trying to learn them. Can you record someone in your family singing the song during the holidays?
Write an Opera
Our Year 4 students are starting a project to write their own operas as a class. They have already chosen a theme and started creating a story. The performances will be in July, so watch this space!
We would love some help with costumes, set and lighting, and fundraising. If you’re interested in collaborating (through time, expertise, materials, or sponsorship), please email [email protected].
Y5 Band Project
Our Year 5 have been excited to choose and discover which instruments they will be playing in their class band. They have all started their whole-class lessons and will be beginning lessons with their tutors after half-term. They’re especially excited to take their instruments home and practise regularly, building confidence, improving technique and getting even better with every session.
Friends of School21 Music – Will you be our friend?!
The music department at School21 fundraises throughout the year for a number of opportunities that go beyond the national curriculum expectations for music. This includes immersive, authentic and sustained instrumental learning through our unique Band Project programme, professionally supported musicals, international music tours and much more.
If you’d like to support us with our efforts and become the proud owner of our exclusive ‘friends of S21 music’ badge, please consider signing up to our scheme via the link below, and making a one off or annual contribution of £30 per year (or £50 for joint membership). We’ll keep you updated on our events & welcome you in for a special fundraising event later in the year, as well as name you on our website to thank you for your support. We also have an option for corporates/businesses who would like to support or sponsor us in a more substantial way.
More information here. Please spread far and wide so we can keep providing and expanding these fantastic opportunities for as many School21 students as possible! https://school21.org.uk/friends-of-the-music-department/
Highlights
Sister Act: A Musical TRIUMPH!
On 11th- 13th March we celebrated ten years of School21 musicals with an unforgettable run of the musical Sister Act. 5months of hard work, including Saturday rehearsals were all worth it. We brought together our whole community, from students in Y7-13, to family & friends, teachers, operations staff, professional musicians and student alumni from the very first musical back in 2016.
Congratulations to the cast of Sister Act 2026. You gave us performances and memories that we will NEVER forget! Photos viewable here (please do not share images of other children on social media) – https://photos.app.goo.gl/YYdRX5Y9VT8xqzeL8

Y6 Tea Party Recital
We celebrated another band project success on Wednesday 25th March. All Y6 students have been working in small ensembles this term, and performed a music cover of their choice for an audience of Y6 family and friends. They showed courage, confidence and community throughout. Thank you for the delicious cakes that we all got to enjoy afterwards!

Battle of the Bands
Y9 shared 13 original songs as part of our annual Battle of the Bands competition. This project is part of the Y9 music curriculum and featured all students in Y9. This year they performed to an audience of all KS3. Winners to be announced at the start of next term! Thanks to everyone who took part, including our amazing staff bands featuring the music team, Mr Anderson, Mr Selwyn and Mr Amaning!

Primary – Soloists and Year 3 recorder players!
On the last day of term we enjoyed a music concert during singing assembly. We heard some sensational soloists, our Year 3 recorder players and our primary choir, who performed a song called Open Up Your Heart. We were really proud of them all!
We’re still looking for prizes and vouchers for the raffle. Please contact [email protected] if you can help!

Food ambassadors
Mrs Gumbeer recently interviewed Year 8 and Year 9 students who applied for the role of School21 Food Ambassadors. Following a competitive selection process, ten students were successfully appointed to the position.
The Year 9 Food Ambassadors are April, De-Lion, Leila, Maria, Serenity, Trinity and Violet. The Year 8 representatives are Anaika, Sameeha and Zayna.
As Food Ambassadors, these students will play an important role in promoting healthy eating across the school, as well as supporting community fundraising events.Picture 1: Group photo of the Food Ambassadors

Food Tech News
Year 9 and Year 11 students were delighted to welcome Chef Harriet from Prept Kitchen, who delivered an engaging demonstration on cooking climate-conscious street food, focusing on bean tacos. During the session, students gained valuable insights into sustainable cooking and the importance of environmentally friendly food choices. They particularly enjoyed the hands-on experience, creating their own taco boxes and exploring new flavours and techniques.
During the Spring term, Year 9 students took part in an “International Cooking” project, where they explored a variety of dishes from around the world. As the term progressed, they developed their skills and understanding of global cuisines. For their final task, students were challenged to design and prepare their own healthy main dish suitable for a teenager. The project resulted in an impressive range of creative and diverse dishes inspired by different cultures.
Recognitions
A huge well done to Iqra and Ahmad from Year 8 for their fantastic achievement in the Sensory Star Grand Finale Competition, organised by Nutrition Kitchen in collaboration with Newham Council.
Despite being the youngest participants, they performed exceptionally well and secured an impressive third place, competing against a number of other schools across Newham. This is a remarkable accomplishment, and we are very proud of their success!

Our World Book Day celebrations brought stories to life and the day was packed with adventure! Each class went to the forest school area where students turned into detectives, trekking through the woods to solve clever book-themed clues hidden among the trees. The spirit of community continued as we welcomed older students from Secondary for shared reading sessions, creating a wonderful bridge between our younger and older learners. To top it all off, the school was a sea of color and creativity as everyone shared their costumes, showcasing a fantastic range of characters from beloved classics to modern favorites. It was a brilliant day dedicated to the joy of discovery and a shared love of books.
Year 6 enjoyed their trip to the Imperial War musuem to meet Jess and Ken (people who were alive during WW2). This is part of their WW2 project, where we have explored: rationing, the blitz, evacuation, D-Day and V-E Day.
We were thrilled to welcome the award-winning author Chitra Soundar to our school recently for an inspiring day of storytelling and creativity. The day kicked off with an engaging whole-school assembly, where Chitra captivated us with tales of her childhood in India and shared the sparking moments that led her to become a writer. Following the assembly, our Year 1 and Year 2 students enjoyed hands-on workshops, diving deeper into Chitra’s wonderful books and exploring the magic of her characters. It was a fantastic opportunity for our young readers to see how real-life experiences can be transformed into enchanting stories!
This term, our playground has some student play leads, supporting adult playworkers in tidying up, watering plants, and capturing quality play moments from the children's perspective! The students went through a selection process of job application, screening by student council then awarded student play team hi vis with badge to support teachers on the playground and assisting other children in need of help.
We have been loving our cooking project in Year 3! We have been learning about savoury meals from around the world, and enjoyed cooking a fiery Mexican chilli and a rich Italian pasta sauce. At the end of the project, we invited in our families to enjoy our delicious Italian pasta meal together. Buon appetito!
This term the Year 1Saffron got up to some amazing things! The children dressed to impress on World Book Day and worked as a team on Winter sports day. During this terms project the students used their cooking skills to make delicious fruit kebabs!
This term, Year 4 have been very busy. During assessment week, they completed their tests and worked hard to show what they have learned. In history, pupils explored the Anglo-Saxons. To consolidate their learning, they visited the British Museum and took part in a workshop on Sutton Hoo. They also enjoyed Winter Games, where they tried a range of activities including rowing, football, dance, karate and more.
As part of the Alternative Pathways RE curriculum, the pupils visited St John’s Church in Stratford. During the visit, they met Reverend Young Lee, who has been leading the church for the past three years. The children were given a tour of the church and had the opportunity to hear the organ being played live, which was a special experience for everyone. It was a very enjoyable and informative visit, and the children learned a great deal from the experience.
