During this project the Reception children developed an understanding of the plants and nature around us and what they need to survive and thrive.
The project provided a wonderful opportunity for students to authentically engage with ongoing community projects at our school, namely the development of our roof garden and playground. With the help of parent volunteers, the children planted their own seedlings which quickly sprouted in our miniture greenhouse, and were then planted into our Reception garden. The children cared for them with much enthusiasm, making signs to remind children not to tread on them and learning how to gently water with the watering can.
Students used a range of creative tools to represent what they see in nature during Spring, experimenting with different mediums to create flowers and butterflies. They learned how to use obersvational drawing as both a creative and scientific tool. At our bug investigation station, they could carefully catch bugs to inspect under the microscope, before releasing back into the garden. They also learned some new recipes using fruits and vegetables, building on their independent kitchen skills.
Through a range of experiences, both creative and investigative, children gained an understanding of what plants need to survive and their responsibility to the plants in their care. They filmed themselves instructing others on how to plant a seed and care for the plants, which they are hoping will help future Reception children care for the garden we have cultivated together.
